Hi class today, we're gonna be discussing algebra. So you might be asking what is algebra? Right? Well, algebra is a part of mathematics that contains letters and symbols that we call variables. So now what is a variable? A variable is a symbol for a number that we don't know yet. We don't know it's value, but we do know that it's a constant. So by constant, I mean, it stays the same.
So the letters that we can use are all along the, the alphabet, but most commonly we use X or Y or Z just the way it is. So here's an example, 21 plus six equals 26. So the way we wanna touch the way we wanna go about doing this equation is we wanna get X all by itself. So on its own side, by its very own, nothing around it. Only on the opposite side of the equal side by itself.
So how are we gonna do this? So as you know, we need both sides to equal each other. So we need the left side to be 26 and the right side to be 26. So that 26 equals 26. So how do we manipulate this equation in order to get it in order to get X on its own? Well, we have to subtract the 21 from both sides. So that means we have 26 minus 21. So class what's 26 minus 21, it's five good job.
So that means that X equals five. So what this means is when you plug in that number, which is the five, which is the constant, if you plug it into the equation from the beginning, it should be equal on both sides. So let's try it. 21 plus X equals 26. So now if we fill it in, it'll be 21 plus five equals 26 does 21 plus five equals 26. It does. So that means that we did it correctly.
